Why don’t you gain 500 grams when you eat a 500 gram steak?

A lot of the steak is water, fiber, and other things your body either doesn’t absorb or quickly gets rid of the excess. Also, calories can be stored more efficiently as fat (9 calories per gram) than as protein (4 calories per gram). But if you had a sufficiently accurate scale, and ate a 500 gram steak, you would in fact be 500 grams heavier immediately afterward. Plus the weight of the steak sauce. And hopefully some fries and a drink. Now I’m hungry.

How is it legal for waiters/waitresses to make less than minimum wage excluding tips? What happens if the tips don’t reach minimum wage?

There is a special exemption to the federal minimum wage laws for certain types of employment, including servers.

They can be paid a much lower minimum (around $2 an hour) on the basis that their tips will take them up to or over the normal minimum wage.

If they don’t make minimum wage over a pay period, the employer has to make up the difference, but in at will states this means that they’ll probably get fired for no-cause if it goes on too much.

Note that the lower minimum wage exemption is conditional on a number of things; for example, an employer paying below the standard minimum wage cannot deduct walkouts from the server’s wages, and the tip money must go directly to the employee and not through the hands of the employer.

Evolutionary, why do different races exist?

Races are not considered to exist in a biological sense, only in a sociological sense.

There may be vast differences throughout humanity, but these differences can not be easily grouped together into easily distinguished “groups”.

humans came up with the concept of “race” based entirely off superficial traits like skin, hair, facial features, etc, long before we had an understanding of the human genome. While it may seem that people in, say, Saharan Africa have been “isolated” from people from other parts of the world, in a genetic, evolutionary sense, they really haven’t been, so they can’t even be classified as a different “subspecies” or “race’” or what-have-you.

From an evolutionary viewpoint, why do men have facial hear, while women don’t?

Both men AND women do have facial hair.(if you ever get close to woman, you can see the “peach fuzz and tiny hairs on her face.) What influences things like thickness and intensity can be attributed to the sex hormone, Testosterone. That’s why men grow facial hair. The evolutionary advantages probably include showing how masculine and healthy you are when you have a strong full beard. Women can show their feminine health with less body hair. That’s what I imagine to be correct. Much like an alpha ass lion with a big bushy mane.

Also: certain genetic and ethnic factors are another variable. Hot climate humans (Africans, South Asians etc, relinquished thier body hair as an adaptation, while cold climate ethnicities (Europeans, east asians, etc) probably retained hair as an adaptations. It varies from culture to cultute and genetic concentration all over the world.

How can humans become addicted to non-chemical things such as gambling?

Well…you are kind of becoming addicted to a chemical. Dopamine. The nice little drug that makes you just feel so good, and is highly linked to the ‘reward’ center of the brain.

You try to do some gambling the first time, eh that’s fun..I guess..I just wasted ten bucks, what the hell? You don’t like that feeling, of being cheated or lost, so you put in some more money. Gasp! YOU WIN! Sirens glare across the screen! The lights shimmer and the money pours out in quarters!

Oh man, that felt really good to win…I really like that feeling, let’s chase it and do it again! OH shit I just lost 20 bucks this time! That felt really crummy!! I want that feeling of WINNING again!

And the cycle continues. It’s the same reason why certain video games, like World of Warcraft or Hearthstone are addictive. You like to WIN. But you HATE to lose.

This is actually really funny if you think about it. I mean, there was totally some sort of ghost or demon about to kill her but then that sheet blew straight into its face and it was so embarrassed that it decided to disappear.

Tremble, mortal, for I am Zerendikos, and I will drag your howling soul to—
